Brainstorming

COLLAPSE

What is Brainstorming Brainstorming involves taking the information already known, along with the resources already on and and using that information to create a plan, set goals and move forward to a better future.  The idea behind brainstorming is it is a push forward.  Without brainstorming, there would be no ability to move forward, new innovations would never be created and the world would never move forward.  Brainstorming involves the ability to think outside of the box and to push the boundaries.  (Myers, 2021)Why Choose this TopicThe idea behind brainstorming involves a person taking risks.  They see what resources they have and they envision where they could go.  There are so many reasons to “play it safe” and just settle for where life may lead.  However, people were not intended to be that way.  They were created to learn, grow and study.  That is not possible unless a person is willing to take a stand, take a risk and see where they can take life.

Comparison

The textbook defines brainstorming as, “a technique for generating solutions among a group.” (Meredith & Shafer, 2020)  Brainstorming is not something that can easily be done by just one person.  There should be a group effort where ideas can be bounced around, tested and a group decision can be made.  One of the greatest resources a business has is its human capital.  Machines and technology can be replaced.  However, human intelligence and their ability to be creative and think, “outside the box,” this is something that cannot be duplicated.  This is why a business should make sure their employees feel valued and that the business encourages teamwork building and loyalty toward the business and toward co-workers.  A business with a strong team dynamic will be able to function at a much higher level. (Oppong, 2017)

In addition to working together, brainstorming can be much more successful when the information gathered by the brainstorming can be compiled and ultimately converged into the best possible ideas that came from the brainstorming process.  This is the way in which the best possible solutions or ideas can be weeded out from those that may have too many uncertainties or errors.  This part in the brainstorming process also involves team work and collaboration.  Individuals must be able to put aside their own pride if their idea is not the best fit and move forward with someone else’s idea.  Those individuals involved in the brainstorming process understand that they are there for the overall good of the company and their ego cannot get in the way.  The company’s success means a success for everyone involved.  (Seeber, Vreede, Maier, & Weber, 2018)

Article Reflection

With all of the changes occurring in the world and the global pandemic increasing the need for more and more people to work remotely, more and more people are finding it harder to communicate and thus brainstorming groups are more difficult.  Many companies have had to resort to virtual meeting and online brainstorming sessions.  The question is, does the idea behind brainstorming work differently in a primarily virtual setting?  The fact is that the while virtual meetings are different and can pose new challenges, the overall determining factor to the success of brainstorming activities relies on the individuals involved in the sessions.  The overall openness and willingness of the individuals involved directly affects the overall success for the entire group.            Studies have been conducted using control groups where two groups were given a brainstorming activity.  One group was completely virtual while the other got to meet in person.  The challenge that faced the virtual group was keeping all of the members focused and interested on what was going on.  When all distractions were removed and all team members were motivated to participate, they were able to perform just as well as the team who was able to meet in person.  This research emphasizes the idea that a person is able to move past barriers and limitations if they remain focused and they do not lose their motivation, in addition, the proof that the success or failure of the entire business can be affected by one person.  (Minas, Dennis, Potter, & Kamhawi, 2017)

Biblical Integrations

Individuals can and do affect the ability of others to perform, this is the same as the church, each member although different, makes up one body and all members are intertwined.  When one member falls, the whole body suffers.  Romans 12:5 read, “So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to the others.” (NIV)            In addition, each person is to encourage one another to stay focused and run the race.  Even when distractions come, each person must uphold the other.  Romans 12:10 instructs, “be devoted to one another in love.  Honor one another above yourselves.” (NIV)

Finally, hold on to the vision, rather it be the mission of the business or the organization or the mission given by God.  1 Corinthians 9:24, “do you not know that in a race all runners compete, but only one wins the prize.  Run in such a way that you might seize the prize and make it yours.” (AMP)

Application

Mentioned previously, the onset of a worldwide pandemic that seemed to take the world by surprise has pushed more and more businesses into a virtual workplace.  Many people found themselves working from home, their children having to be at home and complete their school work.  This was a challenge for many people and one that has caused a great deal of stress, a new focus on time management and a reconstruction of meetings and how the everyday workload is accomplished.            Many people had to adapt to a new way of life, rearrange schedules and determine how to continue life as normal as they could.  This also provided new challenges; many people had to work from home where they had added distractions from children and spousal needs to internet and technology malfunctions.  People had to learn how to stay motivated and remain positive during one of the most difficult times in the global history.  (Gao & Sai, 2020)

Brainstorming is a group effort and requires to participation and motivation of every person on the team.  However, with many businesses being virtual, it is more and more difficult to keep people motivated.  This article discusses how one person can create success or failure for the entire group.  The article discusses a study perfumed on two control groups, one virtual the other in person and how the virtual group, when motivated was just as successful as the in- person group.  The article demonstrates that brainstorming can be done virtually even though it may be more challenging, it is indeed possible.

Brainstorming has to be more than just sitting around discussing ideas.  This article discusses he importance of moving forward.  Businesses cannot grow unless they are willing to take risks and move forward and the ability of a business to take risks hinges on the willingness of its employees to take risks.  People have to move \”beyond their traditional role.\”  They have to see themselves as team players and realize that change is inevitable and they can either fight against or ultimately fail, or they can accept the fact it is coming and be prepared to do something about it.  The business will succeed as a team or stumble, learn from their mistake and as a team rise again.

Oppong, N. Y. (2017). Exploring the importance of human resource activities-strategies alignments: Interactive brainstorming groups approach. Cogent Business and Management.

This article discusses the importance of a business or organization creating a \”creative community.\”  The idea behind brainstorming is to come up with new ways to handle situations, new technological advancements and new innovations.  This cannot happen by doing the same thing that has already been done.  This article discusses that a brainstorming team has to be imaginative and creative in order to be a success.  Sometimes that may mean taking risks and not everything will be a success.  But part of the learning experience is making mistakes, learning from them and trying again. Falling down does not mean the business failed.  The only way it fails is if it never gets back up.

Seeber, I., Vreede, G.-J. d., Maier, R., & Weber, B. (2018). Beyond Brainstorming: Exploring Convergence in Teams. Journal of Management Systems, 939-969.

The article discussed the idea of \”convergence\” in the brainstorming process.  The article states that brainstorming is more than creating ideas and bouncing them back and forth.  Brainstorming means that the best ideas are chosen, tested and observed until the best idea remains this is the idea behind convergence.  Each individual must understand their idea may not be the best and they must be willing to look at others ideas and choose what is best for the company.  This is why teamwork is so important when brainstorming and coming up with new ideas and approaches.  The ultimate goal is the success of the company.
