Beauty and the Beast

Over the course of this class, we’ve looked at several different versions of a particular character. We’ve seen Cinderella as told by the Brothers Grimm, as Yeh-Shen of ancient China, and as Charles Perrault’s Donkey Skin. We have also looked at several different versions of characters: Frankenstein, Romeo & Juliet, Superman, and many others. Each iteration of a character fits into a specific time and place, but despite these changes, they seem to still be the same character. But what are the essential components of any given character?  For this paper, you will be choosing a character that has been depicted in multiple ways over time, studying three to five versions of that character across different time periods and in different media, and writing a four to six page paper exploring the various iterations of that character. You can use folk tales, short stories, poetry, movies, art, music, or any number of other depictions of your character across different media, but you are limited to only one example from each genre and you must include at least one critical article or essay as a source. In this paper, you should first establish the origin of your fictional character. When did this character first make an appearance in the public imagination? Where did this particular story first emerge? Next, you should present three to five versions of your chosen character, briefly placing each version in its specific rhetorical context (i.e. discussing the particular discourse community in which each version appeared). What about Sondheim’s version of Cinderella makes her fit into the mid-1980s? What elements of Yeh-Shen’s story are particularly Chinese? How does the genre or form in which a particular story is presented affect its content? Finally, you need to decide what the essential elements of this particular character are: If you were writing a new version of Cinderella, what elements would you have to include for you to consider your creation to be a version of Cinderella and not a new character altogether? Does Cinderella have to lose a slipper? Does she have to have a wicked stepmother? Be sure to explain and defend your criteria. We will be workshopping this paper in class throughout Week Ten. If you miss class that week, you will have to make arrangements to fill out your Response Chart on your own time as well as be assigned a Revision Partner, so please contact Ms. Lafond as soon as possible for assistance. On Wednesday, March 25th, this paper and all the supporting documents that go along with it will be due. On that date, you will also be giving a brief, informal presentation that describes your project to the rest of the class. Character Evolution Project
