Assignment 3.1: Conducting an Interview

This practice exercise allows students to plan, conduct, and summarize an interview.

You will write a 2- to 3-page paper (12-point font) summarizing the expert selection method, interview questions, and interview findings.

Objectives:

Identify resources for finding experts.
Describe techniques for conducting interviews.
Conduct an interview.

Instructions:

Step 1: Select an expert or a non-expert to interview. Choose a topic (or use your research paper topic). Then, identify and select a good candidate for an interview.

Step 2: Create questions to ask the interviewee. Generate a list of at least 10 questions for the interviewee. Ensure the questions are designed to provide meaningful answers for your topic.

Step 3: Schedule the interview. Contact the interviewee and schedule the interview.

Step 4: Conduct the interview. Conduct the interview using the questions generated in Step 2. Take detailed notes and/or ask the interviewee if they approve of recording the interview session.

Step 5: Summarize and organize the interview notes. After the interview, read the notes you took, and add details as appropriate. Highlight key points, topics that you would like to research further, and document any conclusions from the interview.

Step 6: Write a paper summarizing the interview. Create a 2- to 3- page document detailing the interview process, data, and conclusions. First, list the interviewee’s name, profession, and reasons why he or she was selected for the interview. Next, list the questions asked. Finally, document the next steps based on the findings from the interview and how you will use the information as you move forward with your research.

The use of outside resources is strongly recommended and all papers must be cited and written in APA format.
