Write a two page paper that articulates your rationale for selecting the three artworks

As you know, the Artwork Analysis Assignment is divided into three parts. The aim of the assignment is to explore how artists across time, place, and culture explore similar ideas in their works of art. Part one of the assignment asks you to research and select a theme and three works of art that explore or represent that theme. Parts two and three of the assignment will connect directly to part one and the artworks you select.

PLEASE NOTE: The Artwork Analysis Assignment and Art Museum Visit Assignment are two different assignments with unique requirements and deadlines. The artworks you select for the Artwork Analysis Assignment will not be used for the Art Museum Visit Assignment.

When drafting your submission for part one of the Artwork Analysis Assignment, be sure to follow the conventional guidelines for writing a research paper. (See the announcement entitled Writing About Works of Art for more on this.) Organize your paper into an introduction followed by multiple focused body paragraphs, a conclusion, and a works cited list.

Quotations and paraphrases of your academic research that you include as evidence and in support of your ideas, require in-text citations that relate to the full citations in your works cited list. Do not include the assignment prompts in your essay and do not submit an outline of ideas. Following is an example on how to approach part one of the Artwork Analysis Assignment.

Step One: Select a theme to explore. Take a look at the curator\’s apprentice game included in our course shell for ideas of possible themes to focus on. There are also a variety of engaging themes explored in The Art Through Time resource in our course shell. A few of the themes explored in the resource include:

History and Memory, Ceremony and Society, Death, Domestic Life, etc.

Step Two: Select three works of art that explore and illustrate your chosen theme. The works of art should come from three different cultures and three different time periods as listed in the assignment overview

Time period 1: 10,000 BCE – 500 CETime period 2: 500 – 1800 CETime period 3: 1800 – Present

Here’s an example:?Let’s imagine that you decide to explore the theme of History and Memory. You could examine this theme as it is represented across time and culture by selecting the following artworks:

Time Period 1:  Ancient Egypt,  \”The Palette of King Narmer\”

Time Period 2: Medieval England,  “Many fall in battle and King Harold is killed” (detail) from the Bayeux Tapestry

Time Period 3: American Indian, Untitled, page number 21, from the Arrow’s Elk Society Ledger

Or perhaps you decide to explore the representation of power and authority. The following works of art would illustrate how different cultures explore this theme:

Time Period 1: Ancient Egypt, Egyptian pharaoh portrait

Time Period 2: Medieval England, painted portrait of Henry VIII Time Period 3: Contemporary Japan, portrait of HM Emperor Akihito and HM Empress Michiko of Japan.

Remember that you will be writing about the same three works of art for parts two and three of the artwork analysis assignment as well.

Step Three: Research your theme and each of your selected artworks using academic sources. Use the LAPU online library, the resources I suggested in the announcement entitled Research Tips and Resources, our course resources, etc. Do not rely on your personal interpretations or assumed knowledge.

Then, write a two page paper that articulates your rationale for selecting the three artworks and identifies the common theme that connects them. Include images and/or links of the selected artworks.

Respond to the prompts outlined in the assignment in the body of your paper.

When writing papers, be sure to follow the conventional guidelines for a research paper: introduction and conclusion, multiple body paragraphs each addressing a specific topic or idea, transition sentences, etc. Do not draft your responses in bullet points or a numbered list. Craft an essay that is clear, concise, and coherent.
