Chose one of the following societies: Europe, the Middle East, India, or China. For the society you have chosen, write an essay in which you describe that society in the year 1500. Discuss the political, religious, economic, social or other aspects of that society. What parts of that society can be considered “native” or unique to that society, and what parts have been picked up through cross-cultural exchange?
Discuss the role of government in Ancient World History. How did ancient governments function? Were there any common elements in these governments? Was there any evolution of government in the ancient world?
Discuss the role of religion in shaping Ancient World History. What are the major religions and how have they shaped some societies in unique ways? Has religion had any common effect in the various societies we have studied?
I do not have a length requirement, but I do have two other requirements for a passing essay. First, you must have a thesis which you prove. Second, your essay must be comprehensive, covering the entire period from 3500 BCE-1500 CE. You do not have to write about everything that we have covered in class. You simply must be sure not to leave out any major time period. The best approach is to break the semester into three portions:
Early Civilizations: 3500-500 BCE (Lectures 1-4)
The Classical Era—500 BCE-500 CE (Lectures 5-10)
The Post Classical Era—500-1100 CE (Lectures 11-15)
The Age of Integration–1100-1500 CE (Lectures 16-20).
