Medium of communication: Writing instruction:

Write about a medium of communication – photography, and discuss its central characteristics by comparing and/or contrasting 3 readings provided.

Additionally, research a minimum of 3 secondary, scholarly sources to support your arguments. These materials must be articles from peer-reviewed journals, or chapters from books published by academic publishers.

So there are 6 sources in total

Writing guidelines:

Consider the ways in which photography can be considered a “medium”:

In what ways is photography characterized by space or time, transmission or storage, reproduction or ritual, production or consumption, etc.?

What sorts of places, practices, communities, or economies form themselves around photography?

Consider these medial characteristics of photography by comparing and/or contrasting 3 theoretical arguments or perspectives from readings provided. For example:

Walter Benjamin’s notion of “exhibition value” and “cult value” and their relationship to photography.

James Carey’s understanding of the “transmission view of communication” and “ritual view of communication,” which can be better applied to photography?

These are just my suggestions; you can talk about other arguments if you think they are better related to photography. But make sure to compare/contrast 3 arguments in total, one from each article provided.

Articles to be used:

Walter Benjamin (1936): “The Work of Art in the Age of its Mechanical Reproduction”

James Carey (1988): “A Cultural Approach to Communication” (uploaded separately)

Sturken, Marita and Lisa Cartwright (2001): “Practices of Looking: Images, Power, and Politics” (uploaded separately)

Grading criteria:

Content & Critical Thinking includes analysis, thesis statement, interpretation and critique of each of three theoretical perspectives, a strong framework for comparing the three theoretical perspectives, the critical use of three (or more) additional scholarly sources, and your personal engagement with the topic and questions raised.

Clarity & Technique includes an effective introduction and conclusion, good sentence structure, readability, organization and transitions between paragraphs, proper grammar, punctuation and spelling, and correct citations and references.
