Organizational behavior: Class, if you review the revised IPO deadlines, do you think those reflect some good lessons learned by Gen One’s management, Board and all the previous naysayers? Any thoughts on how they moved from Don’s first memo to that dynamic meeting described in the news article?

Looking back, Don mentioned in his March 2, 2004 memo to the senior leadership team that they needed to block out two days offsite to learn more about the IPO requirements. That memo signals the start of learning opportunities, doesn’t it? All of the previous background information shows that until that point, the company has focused only on problem solving rather than creation. Chapter 18 tells us that problem solvers work to make something go away and tend to foster a culture that encourages people to run around putting out fires. That emphasis on reactiveness often negates innovation and continuous improvement. (Robbins & Judge, 2011). To me, one of the strategic challenges is how to turn problem solvers into creators. In an organization such as the company we are discussing that has a history of “following the leader,” what changes can be made to foster innovation?
