Intellectual property

intellectual property

Authorship is a hotly contested topic. Here are some questions for you to think about for this discussion: What are your thoughts on plagiarism and intellectual property? At what point do we own the words that we say and write? In what situations do you think citation is necessary? Are there other, perhaps more important ways, for us to honor the work of others? How would you differentiate the various sorts of plagiarism? Do you think plagiarism is akin to "stealing"? What sorts of consequences do you think there should be for plagiarism?

Among authors, artists, and filmmakers, creative influence, collaboration, and a certain amount of borrowing are acceptable (even encouraged). How/why is the situation different in the academic environment? Finally, how is authorship shifting in the digital age, where we have internet sites being authored by a community of (sometimes unknown) authors rather than a single author? Think about something like Wikipedia, for example.

Pick an interesting point from one of the articles you read (for this week’s reading) to refer/respond to in your initial post to this discussion.
