You will, over the course of the semester, attend and critically evaluate a speech presentatio

You will, over the course of the semester, attend and critically evaluate a speech presentation. Papers may be completed at any time throughout the semester, but must be submitted via D2L dropbox before the last day of class. Any papers submitted after that time will not be graded. Ideally, the event you choose to evaluate will showcase one speaker who formally addresses an audience for a minimum of 20 minutes. Acceptable presentations may include (but are not limited to): TED talks, guest lectures, sermons, political rallies, etc. You may not utilize a classroom setting for your paper. If you are unsure about the eligibility of a particular event for this assignment, I will happily approve (or disapprove) your event ahead of time.

Paper Requirements:

  • You should aim for 1 – 2 typed pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1” margins. Your paper will be APA formatted.
  • You must include the name and date of the event, along with the name of the speaker, in the paper.
  • Your paper must be submitted within one week of when the event took place. If you chose to evaluate a presentation you found on the internet, this requirement is vacated.
  • If you attend an event in person, you must attach an event program or any evaluative notes you took during the presentation.

Paper Components – 3 things must be covered:

  • Define and/or discuss a course concept of your choosing (which will then be reflected in your observations of the presentation).
  • Describe the nature of your chosen event and provide specific observations of the text, speaker, audience, rhetorical situation, etc. to exemplify your chosen course concept.
  • Utilize your discussion of the course concept to support your conclusion(s) as to how effective the presenter was in achieving his/her speaking goals. In other words, did the speaker’s employment of your chosen course concept add to or detract from the overall effectiveness of the presentation?
