Discuss the changing family patterns in your family and the impact that has had on all family members: parents, siblings, grandparents. How can a mental health worker prepare to assist your family’s needs? 

Discuss early childhood developmental tasks and the impact (cost, resources, stress, time, work, relationships, etc.) of these tasks on the family system. If you have children (four children) yourself, discuss the impact it had on you. If you have not had children, discuss impact you have seen on others having children (friends, family members, or your parents during your childhood). 

How does sexuality develop and are there any differences between heterosexual development and homosexual development as well as any gender differences? How does sexuality and the family life cycle interact? What beliefs/messages about sexual orientation were transmitted to you through your own family? I was raised to believe that Sex is conducted between a man and a woman. Homosexuality was not accepted in my family, not to the point of hate but strongly discouraged and I don’t have any gay siblings or family members that I know of. Marriage is strongly encouraged before marriage.

Explain why adolescence is a time of high-risk behavior. Explain if there any risk factors (gender, brain development, culture, trauma history, substance use, low income, supervision, etc) which can result in increased high-risk behavior and identity issues. Cite current statistics to support your claims.

Explain the defining patterns for single middle adults. What are some of the unique challenges various single middle adult family types deal with? Why is it important for mental health workers to be aware of these challenges? 

How have the challenges that single middle adult family types face changed from previous generations? Provide examples. What could be potential causes for these changes?
