One form of technology that I am cautiously optimistic about is the battery and its evolution. Reading from the future technology timeline in the module resources, they have nuclear batteries listed for the year 2031. This is technology that I have already heard of prior to taking this class. The idea is to encase nuclear fission waste products, like radioactive graphite, inside of nano diamonds, which would be able to convert the radiation into usable electricity. It would make practical use of our abundance of nuclear waste. Such a battery would essentially be self-recharging and have a very long life, so it could provide consumers with their own independent source of electricity. Currently, this technology is in its infancy. But I am optimistic.
Since the battery would be constantly producing energy, then in large enough quantities, they could be used to power almost anything, including communication systems. Any form of communication that relies on electricity to work could benefit from a battery that effectively never loses its charge. In addition, the battery could also be a reliable source of electricity in areas of the world where there is little energy infrastructure, thus enabling greater communication between such areas and the rest of the world.
