Good post Susanne, when I think about sustainability, the environment is not something that comes to my mind. Sustainability to me makes me think about our processes that are geared to the delivery of quality of care, while controlling associated costs.
Medical waste is an expense for any healthcare facility. It is a necessary and required service. Healthcare leaders should ensure that medical waste is being discarded correctly. We should also ensure that the medical waste is true medical waste, to prevent wasteful spending.
Controlling medical waste destruction cost can be done by ensuring staff are educated about what is deemed biohazardous waste and how they should correctly dispose of such. Through controlling unnecessary spending, more resources can be utilized to improve quality of care processes.
