1. Kenneth Burke characterized rhetoric, at least partly, as a terministic screen.
By this he meant that rhetoric has a dimension beyond the overt and the obvious. He saw in rhetoric the power to shape perceptions and to guide attention by creating a “lens” through which one could see the world. (See Chapter 3 of Language as Symbolic Action.)
