Select one of the stories listed above and find one quotation that illustrates Character

A1) Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: List 5 details that illustrate the setting (time and place) of the story. (Please label which story you’re referring to).

2) Cooper or Thoreau: List 5 details that illustrate the speaker’s attitude towards nature. (Please label which author you’re referring to).

  • Do not use quotes from the text without quotation marks.
  • Do not use a quote without explaining how the quote illustrates the point you indicate that it illustrates.

Bring these lists to class. They will serve as the basis for a freewrite at the beginning of class and also for group discussions of the excerpts.

B3) Freewrite: What elements of Romanticism or Neo-Classicism do you see in our readings this week? (See the video Neo-Classicism vs. Romanticism for more information about the characteristics of each). Are any of our writers full-on Romantics? Are any of them full-on Neo-Classicists? Do any of them move between the two?

C Fiction readings: “Rip Van Winkle,” “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” excerpt from The Pioneers (“The Slaughter of the Pidgeons”)

PROMPT: In videos 10a and 10b this week, we discussed the role of literary elements such as Plot, Point of View, Character, Setting, Imagery, and Theme in fiction. Select one of the stories listed above and find one quotation that illustrates Character, one quotation that illustrates Setting, and one quotation that illustrates Imagery. After each quote, explain what the quote shows about the literary element it represents. In a paragraph at the end of the post, discuss how the literary elements of Character, Setting, and Imagery contribute overall to the story you’ve selected. You may extend this discussion beyond the selected quotes.
