Writing Competency Statements
1. All statements should be 300-500 words in length.  You must include your word
count.  The information should be divided evenly among the functional areas included in
the competency.  (If there are three areas, each should be about 165 words, if four
areas then 125 words per section.)
2. The Competency Statement should be given as the title.   Papers will not be
accepted with less than 300 words and points will be taken off for over 500.
3. Each paper should be written in firs person "I".  If you do not work in a center you still
should word as if you are incorporating these activities in your classroom.  DO NOT
WRITE I WILL!
4. You can't tell about everything in your statement so think about the things that you
feel are the most important that shows competency in that area.
5. State a goal for each functional area and then state the objective for each.  Think
about the things you do to meet that goal.  For example: my goal for safety is . .. . then
tell how you meet that goal.
6. Each goal and objective should be age, developmentally, and culturally appropriate.
7. Be sure to cover all functional areas when writing statements.
8. Papers should be grammatically correct and free of spelling and punctuation errors.
Do not depend entirely on spell check.  If possible have someone proofread your
paper.  Reread the next day.
9. Before you begin writing think about and make a list of the things that you do in the
functional areas to support the statement.  Be sure to include ideas for working with the
whole class, individual and families.  Organize your list so it makes sense and flows in
good paragraph form.  Papers should be typed douple spaced and 12 inch font.  Only
use black ink.
